Last Thursday, 35 diverse karaoke singers took the stage in the Breeze Nightclub inside the Tahoe Biltmore to compete for a spot in the Karaoke Superstar finals, scheduled for Thursday, April 17 at the Biltmore.
With $5,000 on the line for the eventual winner of the competition, the competitors knew they had to step up the song selection and costumes for the semi-finals in order to make the field of 20 who will compete for the grand prize.
With diverse song choices ranging from “The Humpty Dance” by the Digital Underground to Van Morrison’s “Moondance” to “Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap” by AC/DC, there was something for everyone in the packed crowd to rock out to. And rock out they did. The dance floor was frequently packed — especially when anybody chose a hard rock, dance or funk song — and the entire club was full of spectators and competitors showing a lot of love to those on stage.
What the judges are looking for We asked the judges for semi-finals what they were looking for from the competitors and this is what they told us:
“It’s not just a costume or a voice, it has to connect to the song.” — Evon Eisenbeig
“We’re not looking for mimicry of the original song. They need to let a little bit of their personality show through.” — Kelly Jones
“I thought that a lot of people came up with a great costuming effort [in the preliminary rounds]. There were some people that put more into their costumes than their singing.” — Evon Eisenbeig
The finals In the finals this week each competitors will have to sing two songs, each with a separate costume and will be judged by an all-star panel of five karaoke experts. Spectators are encouraged to come out and cheer on their favorites. And when the karaoke is over and the winner has been crowned, stick around for a live DJ finishing out the night in the Breeze.
This all takes place this Thursday, April 17, in the Breeze Nightclub inside the Tahoe Biltmore starting at 9:30 p.m.
