One week, three boards, one champion — the first ever Ultimate Boarder™ competition kicks off on the snow April 13 at Squaw Valley USA with local riders, including Dave Brumm of Alpine Meadows, in the hunt.
Dave Brumm
• Age: 31
• Hometown: Fredonia, Wisc.
• Current residence: Alpine Meadows
• Home mountain: Squaw Valley USA and Alpine Meadows (Dave works at Alpine in the terrain park)
• Favorite skate park: Truckee (locally), Gardnerville and Sacramento... Anything new.
• Favorite surf break: Maui, Hawaii and Oahu
• Strongest discipline: Snowboarding
• Why did you sign up to be a part of this? “There was a try-out two years ago almost that was right here at Squaw. And I really wasn’t much of a surfer then. And since it was here at Squaw and the skateboarding was in Truckee I figured I’d check it out. So that was two years ago, and ever since then I’ve been trying to surf as much as I can. I’ve just kind of doing it because I signed up for it a long time ago and I’m still registered. It sounds like a good opportunity and a good experience, and it should be pretty fun.”
• How long have you been skating, surfing and snowboarding? He’s been skating for 20+ years, snowboarding for 18 or 19, and surfing for the last couple of years.
• Favorite trick skating, surfing and snowboarding? Snowboarding — 540s. Skating — shove-it. Surfing — “I’m still working on the tricks.”
• What sport is the most difficult for you? Surfing
• What makes you a good all-around rider? “They’re all balance sports. And I’ve been snowboarding forever and skateboarding for a long time. Surfing is different: It’s more of an upper-body sport. But just being balanced and keeping the board under your feet is key for all those sports.”
• In what sport have you hurt yourself the worst? “Snowboarding for sure: I’ve definitely wrecked both knees, my collarbone, fallen on a rail, broke my nose... I’ve definitely hurt myself snowboarding. I’ve never really hurt myself doing the other two. But it’s because I snowboard more than anything else.”
• Ever competed in anything like this? “I’ve competed snowboarding but I’ve never competed in the other two disciplines.”
• What do you think your chances are for winning the whole thing? “I think it’s going to be tough. I’m not doing it to claim the Ultimate Boarder [title]. I’m doing it for fun and for the experience.”
• If it’s not you, any other bets on who might be the best all-around riders? “I have big respect for Terje Haakonsen and Andy Finch, I think those guys are going to kill it. And even like the local kid Ryan Wichert, he’s really good at all three too. I don’t know. That’s another reason I want to see what goes down, because anything can happen. There are pro skaters and surfers too, so if those guys can snowboard, they’ll be in there too. But right now I’d say that Terje Haakonsen could do it because I know he surfs well, and he’s a legend of snowboarding, and I’m sure he can skate too.”
