One week, three boards, one champion — the first ever Ultimate Boarder™ competition kicks off on the snow April 13 at Squaw Valley USA with many local riders in the hunt for the title.
True Love
• Age: 3rd Generation
• Hometown: Ridgewood, New Jersey
• Current residence: Kings Beach
• Home mountain: The High Sierra
• Favorite skate park: Skateboarding is fun where ever I’m at!
• Favorite surf break: The ones that peel...
• Strongest discipline: Snowboarding & skateboarding.
• Why did you sign up to be a part of this? Because it reflects my lifestyle and will bring 50 people with the same interests together.
• How long have you been skating, surfing and snowboarding? I have been skateboarding twice as long as I have been snowboarding, but the past 12 years I have been snowboarding daily. I have 4 years of surfing experience that has been spread out since 1996.
• Favorite trick skating, surfing and snowboarding? Skating — ollie Japan grabs. Surfing — connecting turns with speed. Snowboarding — backside rodeos.
• What sport is the most difficult for you? Surfing, due to the lack of waves in Lake Tahoe.
• What makes you a good all-around rider? If I’m not skateboarding, I’m snowboarding, and if I’m not doing either of those, I’m probably surfing. Mastery through practice is how one gets “good.”
• In what sport have you hurt yourself the worst? Ah, being strapped to a snowboard has given me the most pain. It’s because it’s the one I have been focused on progressing with the past few years. There is always the chance of pain when pushing yourself athletically.
• Ever competed in anything like this? This event is the first of its kind. I don’t think anybody can say they have competed in something like this before.
• What do you think your chances are for winning the whole thing? So-so, given that I am not equally strong in all 3 presently. The deserving winner should be someone who stands out snowboarding, skateboarding, and surfing — one who can hold their own on a pro level in all 3!
• If it’s not you, any other bets on who might be the best all-around rider(s) in the competition? People I have personally seen ripping are Chad Shetler, Aaron Astorga, and the naturally talented Ryan Wichert from Incline Village. He rides for Trilogy Arts, which is based on all 3 and the arts around them. He is on the team for a reason.
• Anything else you’d like to add? Surfing is the root, which bred skateboarding, and snowboarding came from them, so by doing all 3, one can live a full life and not limit their self expression. Being skilled in one, can only strengthen the other.
