If you enjoy energetic music, infectious dancing and everything that goes along with it, come out to the Crystal Bay Casino Friday and Saturday night to witness the music of The Greyboy Allstars. The funk groove band that has been entertaining audiences throughout the past 15 years is back on tour after releasing the critically acclaimed album, “What Happened to Television?” last year, their first studio collaboration in more than a decade.
The band has come a long way since their days in San Diego, where they began creating their innovative style of jazz-funk with DJ Greyboy. In the past several years, all members have had distinguished success with their own individual projects, but nothing compares to the energy they create when they come together on stage.
The last visit to Tahoe was last year in support of their new studio album, “What Happened to Television?” and if that show was any indicator as to what we should expect this time around, spectators will be very pleased.
The Greyboy Allstars will perform Friday, March 21 (with Bus Driver) and Saturday March 22 in the Crown Room at the Crystal Bay Casino. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. Doors will open at 8 p.m., show starts at 9 p.m. For tickets visit crystalbaycasino.com or call (775) 833-6330.
Associate Editor Morgan Kriz caught up with Greyboy Allstars bassist Chris Stillwell for a quick Q&A.
Tahoe World: Do you enjoy playing in Tahoe? How does the energy in Tahoe compare to other venues across the country? Chris Stillwell: The scenery is beautiful this time of year, and that’s always a plus. It’s hard to compare Tahoe to other places. It has its own thing going. We know a few people back from the Humpty’s days, so it’s always nice to see them.
TW: How does it feel to be back on the road together? (I know you have been touring together again for about two years, but even now, how does it feel?) CS: It’s always a fun thing as long as everything is running smoothly (logistics, gear, crew etc.) We’re going on 15 years as friends and bandmates, and it’s like a cozy chair I feel comfortable in. We’re good company.
TW: Since the release of “What Happened to Television,” have you been collaborating in the studio again? CS: No, we haven’t been in a studio since the record. We plan to get in there for the next record possibly around May... hopefully. When we finished the last record, our plan was to make another one within a year, but we’re past that point now. It will happen though.
TW: We know you are all very accomplished musicians individually and collaboratively, in what way do your fellow band members still motivate and inspire you? CS: They all play great solos, and also know how to support a soloist, which is just as important. I think we all try to stoke each other out while playing on stage. They have the musical vocabulary I can relate to. I can honestly say that I’m their biggest fan.
TW: Since you will be here all weekend (two shows) what do you plan to do while you are in Tahoe? CS: Definitely do some long walks — maybe a boat ride. No skiing though … gotta protect the hands.
