March 19
• Open mic night at Sawtooth Ridge Cafe. Bring a guitar or other musical instruments, your voice or just come and enjoy music and food and drink specials after skiing on Wednesday evenings from 6 to 9 p.m. Fish or chicken tacos for $6.25, vegetarian lasagna and house salad for $8.25, $3 pints of Sierra Nevada pale ale, and the specialty drink special is a hot apple pie for $5. • Play time at KidZone Museum. The KidZone Museum is a children’s museum in Truckee, designed for families with children up to age seven. Exhibits engage a child’s curiosity with an array of repeat play activities. The KidZone Museum is open from 10 to 5 p.m. Tuesday-Saturday, 10 to 3 p.m. on Sundays, closed Mondays. March 20
• $20 Squaw tickets. All local merchants and employees in the Tahoe basin, including South Lake Tahoe and Truckee, and the Reno area can ski or ride Squaw Valley USA for only $20. To purchase this special $20 lift ticket, local area merchants and employees should bring a recent local pay stub (dated after January 1, 2008) and a valid photo ID to Squaw Valley’s “D” ticket booth between 8:30 and 11 a.m.
• Megan Lacey at Dragonfly. Megan Lacey is back for an encore performance at Dragonfly restaurant in Truckee. Playing every Thursday through March 27, beginning at 6:30 p.m., Dragonfly restaurant will pair their dining room ambiance, high quality authentic sushi and Cal-infused Asian cuisine with the smooth acoustic sounds of musical songwriter Megan Lacey.
• Bias and Dunn play Acoustic Thursday at Cottonwood. Johnnie Bias and Chuck Dunn have been playing in bands in the Truckee-Tahoe and Reno area for almost 15 years. They will be in the Fireplace Room at Cottonwood for the weekly “Acoustic Thursday” show on March 20, beginning at 7 p.m. and reservations are recommended. “Acoustic Thursdays” feature discounts on selected libations and menu items in the award-winning Bar and Fireplace Room. No cover charge.
March 21
• Greyboy Allstars at the CBC. The Greyboy Allstars have been entertaining audiences throughout the past 15 years, and now they’re back on tour after releasing the critically acclaimed album, What Happened to Television? last year. Catch them March 21 (with Bus Driver) and March 22 in the Crown Room at the Crystal Bay Casino. Tickets are $25 in advance and $30 at the door. • The last of the Boreal Expression Sessions. Looking for a little more competition? Head up to Boreal on Friday, March 21, for the last of the Boreal Expression Sessions. A $5 entry fee for contestants covers the cost of entry and a barbecue dinner. See RideBoreal.com for details.
• Bourgeois Gypsies at the Biltmore. Kaisa MacDonald and Arnold Mitchem head up the Bourgeois Gypsies — a genre-bending acoustic band that pits slow-rocking, porch-setting music against poignant punk rock lullabies that make you tap your foot, clutch your heart, and shake your head all at the same time. Catch them live at the Tahoe Biltmore Friday, Marh 21 at 9 p.m. for a free 21 and older show.
March 22
• Hip-hop sensations Dynamic at Zenbu. Labeled “One of the best hip-hop bands of the Bay,” by the San Francisco Chronicle, Dynamic will be performing at Squaw Valley’s night life lounge Zenbu Tapas Lounge, at 9 p.m. on Saturday, March 22. • Celebrate Women’s History Month. The Rainbow Bridge is giving The Village at Squaw Valley USA a woman’s touch on Saturday, March 22, when the shop hosts two of the area’s most talented female artists and a children’s book author to celebrate Women’s History Month. From 4 to 7 p.m. Tahoe-Truckee area artists Cathy McClelland and Karen Frances and Reno children’s book author Terry Lowey will interact with visitors and locals at The Rainbow Bridge in The Village Fountain Court. • Open Gym Saturdays. Parents can bring their children ages 0-42 months to play in an open, safe environment at the Tahoe Children’s Foundation. The cost is $100 for the entire session or $10 per day. This is the perfect opportunity during the harsh winter days to be sure your children are receiving exercise. Tahoe Children’s Foundation offers this vital program to allow children the opportunity to exercise and interact in a social environment. For more information call (775) 832-8230.
March 23
• Adults’ All-Mountain Easter Egg Hunt at Alpine Meadows. Adults are really just kids in bigger bodies... they need some fun on Easter, too! The adult Easter egg hunt is also free, and is held on all of Alpine’s 2000 acres. If you’re lucky enough to find the golden egg, you win a season pass! For more information, call (530) 581-8210.
• Beacon & Eggs Beacon Search Contest. Practice your beacon search skills in the 2nd Annual Beacon & Eggs contest! Those packin’ PEEPS beacons get extra applause for bring Easter full-circle. Win fantastic prizes provided by Porters, Mountain Hardware, Truckee Sports Exchange, Alpenglow Sports, and Cosmo’s Superfeet. • Sessions Lumberjack Log Jam. Sponsored amateur skiers and snowboarders compete on a natural slopestyle course made out of tree-jobs and logs at Squaw Valley. See www.Squaw.com for more information. March 24
• Swmming year round. Although Lake Tahoe is the ultimate swimming pool, it can be too chilly for swimming much of the year. Swimmers of all ages can still take the plunge at the Incline Village Recreation Center, 980 Incline Way, in Incline Village or Truckee Donner Community Swimming Pool, located at 11725 Donner Pass Rd. in Truckee. • Dragonfly offers sushi happy hour. Newly expanded and remodeled Dragonfly Restaurant and Sushi Bar now offers sushi happy hour every day from 4-5:30 p.m. The special includes a Sapporo and roll for $8. Diners will have a choice of three rolls to pick from, made by mastermind sushi chef Sam Okamoto and his staff. Choices will alternate from week to week to ensure the freshest ingredients possible. • High Altitude ‘Jump Start’ Spin Class. A 45-50 minute multi-calorie burning class begins weekly on Tuesdays at 7:30 a.m. at High Altitude, Incline Village’s state-of-the-art facility. Meisha will be teaching this brand new spinning class which began March 18. High Altitude is located at 880 Northwood Blvd. For information call (775) 831-4212.
• Tahoe Comedy North. Laugh ‘till you can’t hardly breath with headliner comedian Don McEnery, feature Johnny Steele, and guest host Grant Lyons, as well as a guest spot appearance by Lorri Waldman. Show starts at 8 p.m. in the Crystal Bay Casino’s Crown Room. Tickets are $10 advance, $15 day show.
• Jake’s hosts Mountain Aloha Tuesdays. Surf’s up! There’s nothing like bringing a bit of the beach to the mountains. Aloha is more than a word at Jake’s On the Lake, it’s a state of mind.
