Windy City intensity
Afrobeat cannot stand still. As the genre’s tempting sounds continue a resurgence across the globe, Chicago Afrobeat Project (CAbP) remains true to its original vision of breathing the intensity of Chicago’s rich music scene into the infectious sounds of afrobeat.

Afrobeat’s range of influences — funk, rock, jazz, afro-cuban, high life and juju music — settle into a hypnotic, dance-compelling pulse at the core of CAbP. The group layers a fiery originality around this core through high-energy rock and experimental jazz.

The trance-like grooves that hold the floor in the tradition are pushed to new borders in CAbP’s second and self-produced album, (A) Move to Silent Unrest.
Catch this band live July 2 at 9 p.m. at the Crystal Bay Casino’s Crown Room.

Neva plays Tradewinds in Kings Beach
There is something in her voice. A certain depth that seems strange in someone who looks so young... It’s hard to explain, but when you hear Neva sing live, you’ll get it.

And those looks can be deceiving.

Not that she’s old — she is, in fact, 29 — it’s just that Neva first picked up a guitar at age 9, wrote her first legitimate song at 14, and has had her sights set on a career as a musician ever since.

See her at The Tradewinds Bar in Kings Beach at 11 p.m. on Wednesday, July 2.

Former Sheryl Crow guitarist Todd Wolfe plays free Red Room show
Todd began playing on the New York scene back in 1979 with his band, Troy & the Tornados performing in rooms such as the Lone Star Cafe, The Ritz, My Father’s Place, Lamour’s, The Chance, Tramps, Rodeo Bar and probably any hole in the wall in the NYC area that would book the Tornados.

Todd or ‘Troy’ and company opened for a bevy of acts such as, Johnny Winter, Robin Trower, The Neville Bros., Son Seals, Dickey Betts, Omar & the Howlers, Gregg Allman, The Outlaws, Smithereens, Zebra, and his first opener back in 1980, Albert Collins!

Todd decided to head west in 1990 to write and record a demo with a then unknown backup singer named Sheryl Crow. After having that demo passed on by some major labels and not generating much interest after one show case performance, Todd decided to stay in Los Angeles to record and tour with former Textone, Carla Olson. Todd continued to record and perform with Carla and gig with his own blues trio and kept busy scoring soundtracks for the Playboy Channel. Sheryl in the meantime, had finished her first album, “Tuesday Night Music Club” and needed a guitarist for her touring band which she put together in June of 1993 so, Todd came on board and remained until February of 1998 and in that time Crow and her band featuring Wolfe, romped around the world several times having toured with the Rolling Stones, the Eagles, Bob Dylan, Joe Cocker, Page & Plant among others.

Wolfe rocks the Crystal Bay Casino’s Red Room at 10 p.m. for a free show July 3.

Stymie & The Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra
The Crystal Bay Casino presents a very special free concert featuring one of the Bay Area’s hottest bands. Stymie & the Pimp Jones Luv Orchestra will bring their classic funk renditions to the Crown Room for free show on Friday, July 4. Show starts at 10 p.m.

Stymie & the PJLO’s instrumentation an d presentation recalls classic funk groups like Funkadelic and Sly and The Family Stone, yet the music is 100 percent original, blending all the musical influences, modern cultural craziness, and cartoon humor that affect our lives.

By eschewing cover songs to concentrate on crafting soulful, socially conscious originals, Stymie and his behemoth band have injected new life into the flailing SF music scene.

Besides opening for funk legends Earth, Wind, and Fire at California’s Shoreline Amphitheater and Concord Pavilion, Stymie & the PJLO have paid dues at such venerable SF clubs as Slim’s, Bimbo’s, the Elbo Room, the Bottom o f the Hill, and the Paradise Lounge.

The group’s sound incorporates elements of rock, jazz, hip-hop, pop, reggae, Latin, and gospel, while maintaining a soulful funkiness and nastiness that throws audiences into a frenzy.

Kids and Jazz Fans Alike Reap the Rewards of the Daytime Camp and Nighttime Performances
Moody’s Bistro & Lounge is helping children come up with an innovative new response to the age-old question — “What did you do on your summer vacation?” Children who participate in the Fourth Annual free Kids’ Jazz Camp will be able to respond “I played music with a Grammy-nominated jazz artist.” During the July 7 through July 11 camp, some of the country’s top jazz musicians will teach a class unlike anything children experience during the course of a school year.

The five-day event is a part of the annual “Jazz Artists in Residency,” which also includes four evenings of free shows by nationally recognized jazz musicians from July 7–10 and a Truckee Youth Music Program benefit on July 11 and 12 featuring the musicians participating in the jazz camp.

Audiences can watch the Kids’ Jazz Camp teachers in action during free shows Monday through Thursday evenings July 7 – 10 at Moody’s Bistro & Lounge. On Friday, July 11 and Saturday, July 12, the musicians and guests will return to the stage as a benefit for the Truckee Youth Music Program. Admission is $5.

Momentum at FiftyFifty Brewing Co.
Momentum has been a growing musical force in the Tahoe/ Truckee region over the last few years. Their sound puts a modern twist on vintage rock with influences ranging from blues roots and traditional rock, to serious funk and jazz sounds. Momentum’s fans will tell you that the band never seems to sit still on one sound for too long. Their music is defined by widespread influences that carry the group’s jamming from subtle and succinct melodies to hard hitting, body moving rhythms.

The group’s vocalist, Jake Zender, connects with the audience with creative soul-inspired lyrics. Zender’s vocalization is frequently joined with harmonious and upbeat lyrics of both drummer Jon Vanderhoef and bassist John Jewett. The Quartet’s sound is rounded out with the funky rhythmical styling of guitarist Jack Webster. Anyone who has heard this band knows what to expect. For those who don’t, be prepared for an evening of dancing to tunes that may seem reminiscent of classic rock one minute, and deep soulful grooves the next while dipping into long melodic rock guitar solos and punching out upbeat and mind-bending rhythms. No matter what genre of music you prefer, some facet of Momentum is sure to get you moving!

Check them out at FiftyFifty Brewing Company in Truckee at 10 p.m. on July 11, no cover.

Moses Guest plays free show at Biltmore
On Saturday, July 12, Moses Guest (Texas Jam Boogie Band) will perform a live concert for free at the Tahoe Biltmore in Crystal Bay, at 9:30 p.m.

Started in 1995, and named after founder Graham Guest’s fifth generation grandfather, Moses Guest, is a Texas-based, Southern Rock band that has just enough pop, jazz, funk, and country in its veins to appeal to audiences of all ages and origins.

Moses Guest has shared the stage with many great acts in the past few years (and ain’t that the truth), including Moe (twice), Steve Miller Band, JGB Band, Willie Nelson, Los Lobos, Leftover Salmon, String Cheese Incident, Robert Bradley’s Blackwater Surprise, David Nelson Band, Rebirth Brass Band among others.
For more information contact the Tahoe Biltmore at (800) 245-8667 (775) 831-0660; #5 Highway 28, Crystal Bay, NV 89402 or Renegade Productions at (530) 583-2801, www.renegadeshows.com

Truckee River Regional Park July 26:
Bringing a juxaposition between marching band style, and cool-calm folk, Paper Bird joins forces with March Fourth for New Belgium Brewery’s Summer 2008 Tour de Fat.

In lieu of spreading the word about the positive societal offerings of the bicycle, Paper Bird will grace the stage at Truckee River Regional Park on July 26th. The traveling bike festival will bring awareness of how simple it is to better the environment by trading in your car for a bike.

Standing firm in no existing genre, Paper Bird’s backbone is their songwriting, musicianship, and a general allergy to all limitations and trends. With seven members, and no leader, this band is pulled in every direction imaginable, but thanks to their unique instrumentation this Colorado based group is able to merge there spontaneous creativity into one, solid sound.

The members of the band, Sarah Anderson, vocals and trumpet; sisters Esmé and Genny Patterson, vocals; Tyler Archuletta, trombone; Paul DeHaven, guitar; Caleb Summeril, banjo and harmonica; conveniently met in the mountain town of Breckenridge, CO. There, the egg hatched and the birds took flight. Their Jazzy, Folk, Americana sound pays homage to the “Roaring 20’s.” Still, they are able to achieve the Indie rock image and resonance of the current age.
