Hawaii versus Tahoe.

One has big waves. The other has big mountains.

Other than that, I’d say they’re one and the same. Chill, laid back and relaxed. Beautiful vacation destinations with local vibes that stay true to their roots.

So it’s no surprise that Hawaii’s Pepper fit right in at Squaw Valley on Saturday night, that is, except for their bare chests which were quite the contrast to a crowd full of beanies, puffy jackets and sweatshirts.

Pepper rocked it at 48straight. They imported a little bit of Hawaii’s summer to Tahoe’s winter with reggae beats that remind me of the beach.

The trio that makes up Pepper—Bret Bollinger, Kaleo Wassman and Yesod Williams—first broke ground in their home turf on the Hawaiian Islands. But they left their roots in 1999 when they moved to Southern California to leverage success.

Turns out their move was a good one. They released Kona Town in 2002, and have sold more than 45,000 copies. And they’re on a whirlwind of tours and shows throughout the nation.

And on Saturday, the band teased the crowd with the news that they’re about to make a new album.

They also asked for shots of jagermeister. Did anyone ever buy them one?
