Friday, Feb. 8

Rock Kills Kid - 7 p.m. @ Basecamp Pavilion
Based around singer/songwriter/guitarist Jeff Tucker, this California alternative rock outfit made noise with the release of its post-punk-inspired Are You Nervous full length debut.

• The Roots - 8:10 p.m. @ Basecamp Pavilion
One of the newest acts on the Def Jam label, this Philadelphia group showed the way for live rap, building on Stetsasonic’s “hip-hop band” philosophy of the mid-’80s by focusing on live instrumentation at their concerts and in the studio. Industry insiders recognize The Roots as one of the greatest live shows in the music industry.

• Truckee Tribe - 9 p.m. @ the Auld Dubliner
Local band Truckee Tribe creates a unique sound; incorporating genres of music from dub and funk to hip-hop, ska and rock into a roots reggae rhythm to create their signature beats. They create a high-energy vibe and have a totally engaging stage presence.

Their unique range of instruments helps explain the band’s singular sound. The five-member group includes an accomplished harmonica player and a percussionist familiar djembe drums and a range of Latin, Jazz and African percussion styles. The great onstage connection can be explained by one simple fact: three members of the band are blood related.

When front man Stan Charles (vocals, guitar, keyboard) was creating this music project he invited his father, accomplished musician Pete Charles (bass, vocals) and his sister Jenni Charles (percussion, vocals, fiddle) to be a part of his vision. From there the group found musicians Josh Roelle (guitar, keyboard, harmonica) and Colin Osness (drums) and the sound was complete. Truckee Tribe is sure to bring down the house at Auld Dubliner, and it’s a free show, so get there early for a good seat.

Devil Makes Three - 10:30 p.m. @ Plaza Bar
Devil Makes Three has been setting the San Francisco Bay Area ablaze with their hyper driven version of old-time music. The trio’s sound combines bluegrass, primitive country music, folk, rockabilly, Piedmont blues, and ragtime, played with a blazing post-punk attack.

• Rose Hill Drive - 10:30 p.m. @ Bar One
This young rock power trio from Boulder, Colo., is credited with other innovators for the revival of traditional hard rock and early metal/psychodelic. Their hard-driving rock and blues sound is reminiscent of 1970’s stalwarts Led Zeppelin, Deep Purple and Cream.

• DJ Logic - 10:30 p.m. @ Zenbu Lounge
Bronx-born turntable maestro DJ Logic, real name Jason Kibler, is widely credited for helping to bring jazz into hip-hop’s sphere of influence.

• Club 48 - Retro Bash with Sweet Polyester & The Platforms - 10:30 p.m @ OVL Room
Retro disco and funk flair will be a necessity while taking in the groove hits from the ‘70s and ‘80s by one of Southern California’s top dance groups.

Saturday, Feb. 9

• Pato Banton & Mystic Roots - 3 p.m. @ Plaza Bar Patio & 10:30 p.m. @ Bar One
This Grammy nominated reggae singer and toaster from Birmingham, England, now performing with Chico, Calif.’s Mystic Roots, has collaborated with acts such as UB40, Paul Shaffer, David Hinds of Steel Pulse and Ranking Roger of The Beat.

• Dinosaur Jr. - 7 p.m. @ Basecamp Pavilion
The now reunited band that is largely responsible for returning lead guitar to indie rock and, along with their peers the Pixies, injected late-’80s alternative rock with monumental levels of pure guitar noise.

• Pepper - 8:35 p.m. @ Basecamp Pavilion
Originating from Kona, Hawaii, Pepper blends alternative pop/rock, punk, and reggae, and has toured with the likes of 311, Slightly Stoopid and Snoop Dogg.

• Subjektochange - 9 p.m. @ the Auld Dubliner
Subjektochange is a collaboration of four Tahoe-based musicians. Eric Matlock (keyboard, vocals), Nick DeNoia (bass guitar, vocals), and Ray Erst (drums, percussion) are all members of the Jeff Jones Band. Erv Wolf (electric guitar, vocals) is from the guitar duo Shag. Wanting to take the funk and modern elements of their other musical projects a step further the four combined under the name Subjektochange and created this upbeat mantra: “Change is Good.” They describe their music as hard-edged funk and rock, with a smattering of electronic beats. Their musical influences include John Scofield, the Grateful Dead, and the Meters.

Their music is mostly organic, original material. They have expressed a feeling of being able to “stretch out” in their shows between different instruments and styles of music. Their live shows are high energy and they have described the Auld Dubliner as “someplace they feel like family” so expect to get comfortable and be ready to dance. This is a free show.

The Crystal Method DJ Set - 10:30 p.m. @ OVL Room
Led by Scott Kirkland & Ken Jordan, Los Angeles’ Crystal Method has been referred to as America’s answer to the Chemical Brothers. A dance-based electronic duo with a definite rock band feel, complemented by a solid base of American hip-hop, rock, soul, and pop.

• Bedouin Soundclash - 10:30 p.m. @ Plaza Bar
This reggae-influenced Canadian band started in its native Kingston, Ontario, won a battle of the bands competition at Queen’s University, and has gone on to open for David Usher, Default, the Slackers and Wide Mouth Mason, among others.

• BULA Club Night Surprise DJ Performance - 10:30 p.m. @ Zenbu Lounge
The Soundcatcher Soundsystem, featuring DJ VADIM, Abstract Rude and Yarah Bravo

Sunday, Feb. 10

Jeff Jones Band - 9 p.m. @ the Auld Dubliner
The Jeff Jones Band puts out a rocking combo of blues and funk music that is not to be missed. The band is made up of Jeff Jones (vocals, guitars), Eric Matlock (piano, organ, keyboard, backing vocals), Raymond Erst (drums, percussion), and Nick Denoia (bass, backing vocals). The four accomplished musicians have very different training, styles and influences. The mix creates a grooving, jazz-influenced sound that hints to their varied backgrounds.

The funky sounds are reminiscent of greats such as Parliament, while the more jazz and blues inspired tunes bring to mind names such as Lou Reed, Keller Williams and Ben Harper (who Jeff Jones credits as his inspiration to become a full time musician). The band lists other influences as ZZ Top, Chris Whitely and the Meters. Their unique sound gained the Jeff Jones Band the honor of being named Tahoe’s Best Live Band/Musician in 2005. Come check out their distinct musical stylings to wrap up your weekend of fun at the 48Straight tour.
