If you thought that karaoke was all about embarrassing yourself in front of strangers — you’re right. Pick (almost) any day of the week and there is a place that features karaoke in the area.
Chapin of We Ain’t Saints Productions said that karaoke is a simple way of letting loose and there is not much to it than getting on the mic and letting go. If you don’t take it serious it’s an easy way to have a good time. Just get out there and enjoy the moment, he said.
If it’s a mellow Monday night out on the town you are looking for, the Dubliner is not the place for you, although it can be quite entertaining. Chapin explained that karaoke at the Dubliner is the biggest night of the week and is always a packed venue because of the karaoke and the dancing in between songs. It is an earlier karakoke night, going from 8:30 p.m. to midnight.
Professional bands who have played and traveled together for years and years haven’t played in front of as many people as karaoke goers on a Thursday night at the Biltmore. With a crowd of more than 325 people last week, the event is sure to (again) be a hit this winter season. Once Superstar Karaoke gets started mid-February, the American Idol-type craze comes to the North Shore and is not to be missed.
Chapin also hosts karaoke Friday nights at the Tourist Club and Saturday afternoons at Bar One for aprés skiing.
Head to OB’s Pub and Restaurant on Thursday nights if you are looking for a good ol’ time in a pub style venue. Every week is guarenteed to be entertaining and is far less intimiating than being on stage at the Biltmore. The tradition has gone on for many years, bringing in regulars and visitors alike. Long time karaoke entertainer Keith Thomas carries a collection of songs to choose from and he professionally changed his name to “Karaoke Keith.” Now there is someone who will make karaoke a good time. Be sure to keep your eye out for benefit karaoke nights at OB’s. Fun starts at 8 p.m. every Thursday night.
Rookies offers karakoe four nights a week (Thursday through Sunday) starting at 10 p.m. and usually lasts about an hour and a half unless there are a lot of requests, Rookie bartender Naomi Gottschau said. The stage turns into a dance floor depending on the scene each night with live DJ music. The late night menu, pool tables and games will ensure you have a good time watching those ‘actin’ a fool.’
“It gets pretty crazy here on Thursday nights,” Gottschau said. “It’s a great place to have big groups come in and sing and have some fun.”
There is a great mix in the crowd, she explained, just like any other karaoke hot spot, there are regular die hards singers who have fantastic voices and a couple people who are horrible.
“A couple of weeks ago we had to cut someone off because they were screaming at the top of their lungs,” she said. “We usually don’t do that and the guy was cool about it and understood completely, but he was awful.”
If you think your a horrible singer, you’re not alone, but that is not what matters. Have a drink or five to loosen up and get out there and have a great time. Whether you are celebrating a special occasion, relieving some stress or just wanting to go out for a great time, bring the inner rock star out of you and karaoke on the North Shore.
Tips Chapin recommends 1. Smile 2. Have a good time 3. Dance 4. Have back up dancers 5. Don’t sing Whitney Houston 6. Don’t take it too serious 7. Tip your DJ
