Ingrid Backstrom - The life of a professional Skier
Lake Tahoe Adventure Slide Show Series
January 16, 2008
Bar One 7 p.m.

Our very own Squaw Valley resident Ingrid Backstrom has been kind enough to come share her experiences with us, on what it has been like to become a world class professional free skier. Ingrid is one of the top female pro skier in extreme competitions as well as the best ski films each year. A three-time collegiate All-American skier, Ingrid entered her first freeski competition in April 2001. A year later, she was ranked second in the world, a position she’s maintained. Last season she won the Canadian Freeskiing Championships and took third at the U.S. Freeskiing Nationals.

Tahoe World Editor Keith Sheffield caught up with Backstrom to ask about her upcoming talk at the Lake Tahoe Adventure Series:

Tahoe World: You’re about to be a public speaker. No pressure or anything, but are youany good at public speaking?

Ingrid Backstrom: Well, that depends! If I’m relaxed and excited about what I’m speaking about, I think I can do OK. I’ll try my best — this is one audience I don’t want to disappoint.

TW: What will we hear from you?

IB: I’ll talk about skiing and how it works out for me that it’s a job (if people want to hear about that), and I also have a trip I went to, to Baffin Island, that I have some pictures from that I want to show.

TW: This will be a show with visual aids right? Who’s providing the slides/video?

IB: I have some of my own pictures, and many from the professional photographers that I’ve had the pleasure of working with, luckily for the audience as they are way better at taking photos than I am!

TW: You have a bit of a geology background before the free skiing thing took off. What are your favorite types of rocks?

IB: I like the metamorphic kind, usually — the ones that get pushed up and form mountains! Living in Tahoe, you get an appreciation for granite, especially.

TW: Where has the season taken you so far?

IB: My first day skiing this year was Dec.20 — since then I’ve had some great skiing in Tahoe, plus some skiing in the Northwest, where I’m from.

TW: Rate the latest snow to fall on Tahoe?

IB: That was an incredible storm! I missed the first few days of it or so, but I skied 4 days that were so amazing. I love the energy of everyone when it’s dumping here.

TW: You were getting into skydiving last year. Explain to me the appeal of jumping out of a perfectly working aircraft?

IB: I like the challenge of it — you know there are certain moves you have to execute, and I like knowing that you have to do something and then focusing and getting it done. Plus, it’s a really cool feeling to do flips out of a plane — it’s a total rush.

TW: We’ve featured you and a handful of our talented women skiers and boarders a couple times in our pages. How has your life changed since you first appeared in the Tahoe World?

IB: Quite a bit, actually! I travel a lot more, now, and I haven’t had a “real” job the past few summers — I’ve been skiing more year-round. Thanks so much for the support!
