Ongoing Tuesdays Batch of beats on Red Tuesdays
Champagne and Bacon, in association with the Crystal Bay Club Casino, is preparing to bring some of the best dance music from around the nation starting this month. Beginning at 11 p.m. every Tuesday in January and February, there will be a guaranteed feast of top-notch headliners from around the U.S. in the Red Room at the Crystal Bay Club.
“We’ve really stepped it up a notch this winter,” says Steve Emmerich, primary talent buyer for Champagne and Bacon. “Last year was so successful that this year we are flying international touring headliners in every other week. Most of these DJs play in big clubs and raves around the world, so hearing them in such an intimate setting is really amazing. Our phenomenal local DJs will support them, and on the other weeks we give our strong local DJs the spotlight.”
Tuesday, Jan. 15, is the Women of the Wheels of Steel series, which features all women DJs. Ana Sia, a rising glitch hop and breakbeat DJ from San Francisco, will be supported by local DJs Bacy from Tahoe and Jacie from Reno. “Women of the Wheels of Steel always is one of our best nights,” said Emmerich.
The last Tuesday of the month, Jan. 29, will feature one of Tahoe’s most beloved performers, David Starfire. A DJ/producer/bassist/drummer living in Los Angeles, he has performed a few times in the area and packs every room he plays. Playing a mixture of breakbeat, dubstep, hip hop and house, at times infused with a banghra and world beat, David is a must-see performer and steadily rising in popularity. A headliner across the globe (he was the first breakbeat DJ to ever tour India) his demand is so high he returns to play three shows in the area. All shows run every Tuesday from 11 p.m. to 2 a.m. and have no cover. They are for ages 21 and over.

Jan. 11 Blues Master Chris Cain playing the Red Room
Chris Cain’s jazz-tinged, blues soaked guitar and deep, warm vocals have the maturity and authenticity of bluesmen many years his senior. His expressive style is the result of a lifetime of study and the relentless pursuit of music mastery. His passion and intensity are a blend of his mother’s Greek ancestry and his father’s soulful black heritage.
Cain was raised on stories of his father’s childhood upbringing on Memphis’ Historic Beale Street and attended his first B.B King concert at the tender age of three. Blues music played continuously on the home stereo and family outings were often trips to concerts. Cain recalls, “I remember when I was a kid, my Dad would be mowing the lawn with the stereo blasting Muddy Waters. When I look back, that was pretty cool. There was always music playing at our house, Ray Charles, B.B. King, Freddie King, Albert King, all the greats.”
Catch Cain live at the Crystal Bay Casino’s Red Room Friday, Jan. 11 for a free show.

On The One
Originality, virtuosity and universal appeal are rare qualities to find together in today’s music and entertainment scapes. These giant young players are cut throat funky with diverse music that attract large diverse crowds. They utilize music as a weapon of mass construction.
“On The One” is the four piece vision of John Staten and Jesse Molloy, who spent over two years touring the country with Carlos Washington and the Giant People Ensemble.
The New Mastersounds In the late 1990’s, guitarist and producer Eddie Roberts was running a club night in Leeds called “The Cooker.” When The Cooker moved into a new venue with a second floor in 1999, there was space and the opportunity to put a live band together to complement the DJ sets. Simon Allen and Eddie had played together in 1997 as The Mastersounds, though with a different bassist and no organ. Through friends and the intimate nature of the Leeds music scene, Pete Shand and Bob Birch were added on bass and Hammond respectively, and The New Mastersounds were born.

Tea Leaf Green
Following the 2005 release of their critically acclaimed album, Taught to be Proud, Tea Leaf Green toured North America becoming one of the most exciting and fastest growing rock bands today. Busting out of a revitalized San Francisco music scene, the group has honed their strength as both songwriters and improvisers to catapult to the next level, keeping audiences screaming for more. Their latest release, Rock ‘n’ Roll Band, captures lightning in a bottle. Available separately in both CD and DVD formats, the film joins the band for an evening performance at The Fox Theater in Boulder, Colo. and offers an intimate look at a day in the life of a young rock band on the rise. For the DVD, director Justin Kreutzmann, son of The Grateful Dead’s Billy Kreutzmann, provides both a snapshot of where the band is today and clear evidence of where they are headed tomorrow.
Hot Buttered Rum
Hot Buttered Rum, one of the hardest-working and fastest-rising stars in the musical firmament, has become, over the last five years, a group that is infinitely greater than the sum of its parts. It began with a core of five uniquely talented musicians, writing and singing songs on the mountaintops and city streets of Northern California; five musicians who, on the night they realized they loved playing together too much to ever stop, were sipping a warm buttery drink from which the group derived its name. Since that fateful night, the organization has steadily expanded to include a rich tapestry of fans, friends, and family, reaching from coast to coast.
Jan. 19 The Smokehouse Gamblers will play the Pastime Club
In the beginning there was light, or so some say; a little whiskey to keep you warm. There was Kerouac and kerosene, wide-open spaces, the sun and nothing left to do but search out time. That’s the Smokehouse Gamblers’ philosophy on traveling the Golden Road.
Hidden away in the rolling hills of Sonoma County, Calif., a stone’s throw from San Francisco, the Smokehouse Gamblers emerged in January 2005, loaded with bass, drums and guitar. This trio indie-rock outfit has traveled red dirt roads, sailed ships navigating lost seas, and charred their brows on stage with 40-foot flames galore. Their trek for enlightenment shadows today’s music scene, changing direction like swirling winds and waves eroding the rugged California coastline.
The band has two independent albums their credit. The Smokehouse Gambler’s first album, “Blood on the Ladder” was released in late, 2005. In the spring of 2006, the Gamblers’ second album “Tales from the Seven Seas” was recorded in Portland, Oregon.
The Smokehouse Gamblers are: Ted Baggett - vocals, guitar, harp, Matt O’ Shea – bass and vocals, Jim Jacobs – Drums.
Be sure to catch them at the Pastime Club in downtown Truckee on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 9:30 p.m.
