Either you came to terms that you were out of shape long ago or you realized it half way down your first powder run of the season. Ski season is finally upon us and the Tahoe World asked local personal trainer Kathy Brown to review some general tips to remember before and after you hit the slopes:

• Know your body — if you have any injuries, how you’re feeling, energy levels, etc.
• Strengthen core — do some light yoga or pilates to strengthen your core.
• Cardiovascular condition — because skiing and snowboarding is an anaerobic exercise, it is important to get your heart rate elevated for 20 minutes or more. It will keep your stamina going on the slopes.
• Don’t overexhaust your body — save the bulk of your energy for shredding on the slopes
• Stretching — stretching the muscles before and after skiing/snowboarding will reducing muscle tension, relax the body and prevent injuries. It will increase the ability to achieve an extended range of motion.
• Hydrate — drink lots and lots of water. It doesn’t hurt to drink some electrolytes too.
• Eat right — fuel your body by eating a healthy breakfast. Bring healthly snacks such as trail mix, Cliff Bars or a PB&J out on the slopes with you to snack on throughout the day.

Brown also suggests practicing yoga. Skiing/snowboarding demands mental alertness as well as good balance. Yoga asanas strengthen your muscles, release physical tension and improve your concentration and poise. Yoga makes your limbs balanced, strong and relaxed.

Whatever sport you choose to practice, yoga can enhance and complement your ability. Most sports build muscular strength and stamina, often in specific areas of the body. Yoga can help to check any imbalance in muscular development and will enable both your body and your mind to function more efficiently. Here are a few workshops and classes in the area to check out.
