A little taste of NYC

The Space
Truckee locals and visitors yearning for a real New York deli in town can rejoice as Peter DeShields and Scott Leifer — two friends who have been talking about opening a deli since they went to high school in Long Island, N.Y. — have opened the Stir Crazy Deli at the corner of Church and Bridge streets. Step inside and you’ll immediately see the large deli cases stocked with Boars Head meats, fresh cheeses, salad fixings and take-home dinners.

Currently there is seating for six at a long counter inside, and according Leifer, they hope to add more tables in the future. Historic photos of the old building housing the deli — which dates back to the late 19th century — adorn the walls along with classic New York City photographs and subway signs.

The Food
DeShields and Leifer characterize Stir Crazy as a “hybrid New York deli” because DeShields’ culinary background — he was once the Executive Chef for NASA (yeah, that NASA) — means that everything tastes a little bit better than typical deli fare.

House specialties include The Brooklyn sandwich from the Penn Station Hot Sandwiches list (made with marinated grilled tri-tip, blue cheese and roasted red peppers on a hero); the Don Corleone from the Grand Central Station Cold Sandwiches and Wraps list (prosciutto, salami, ham, cappicola, provolone, oil and balsamic, roasted red peppers, lettuce, tomato and red onion on a hero); and for vegetarians, the Madison Square Garden Wrap (featuring marinated veggies, lettuce and a balsamic drizzle).

Anyone who’s ever been to an authentic (and quality conscious) New York deli will be glad to see that DeShields and Leifer use only Boars Head meats in their sandwiches. And all of the soups and other menu items are made in-house and to-order.

“We’re just trying to bring some fresh food to the locals and feed the people of Truckee for a good price ... with a little New York flair,” Leifer said.

The Drinks
The Stir Crazy drink case is stocked with a good selection of juices, sodas, milk, energy drinks and bottled water. And there’s always a pot of coffee on for those looking for a caffeine fix.

Gotta Try
It’s typical to think of delis as lunch spots, but don’t overlook the breakfast items Stir Crazy has on its menu. The Hills West Special (two eggs, ham or sausage or bacon, and American cheese on a roll, along with coffee or juice) might just be the best breakfast deal in town at $4. And the other six breakfast sandwiches and burritos are all either the same price or $1 more.

Tidbit
Feeling too lazy to cook but still hungry for a good meal at home? Ask about Stir Crazy’s take-home dinner options. This week they’re featuring lasagna and chicken parmesan, but entrees will rotate and requests are always welcome.

Price Range
Sandwiches from $6 to $10, salads are all about $6, with deli salads starting at $2 for a side and priced by weight after that. Breakfast items range from $4 to $5 and take-home dinners start at about $7 and go up to $13.

The king?

The only thing that makes Stir Crazy's "The King" sandwich king is its royally high price. $9.00 for Pastrami, cheese and mustard. I can get a better pastrami across town for half the price. If you're looking for pastrami skip Stir Crazy.

You probably wouldn't know good pastrami if it hit you in the face. I've had the "King" many times now and it is still the best pastrami sandwich in Truckee.
