Jan. 4 Wingnut Adams Blues Band returns to the Red Room Wingnut pays homage to the roots of the Blues, while injecting his own life experiences into a funky musical stew that captures hearts and souls everywhere. The Wingnut Adams Band came together in early 2002 to begin work on a CD project. They soon realized that they shared a love of a strong danceable groove, as well as a desire to interact with the fans to a very high degree.
The band’s goals were straight forward … #1) Keep it simple … with a groove. #2) Take it to the people. #3) Give ‘em everything you’ve got.
One of Northern California’s most booked festival bands, they have left their mark on stages such as Black Oak Casino, Jackson Rancheria, Hayward/Russell City Blues Festival, Street Vibrations, Hollister Rally, Stockton Blues Festival, Modesto Blues Festival, Lodi Grape Festival, Plumas Blues Festival, Stockton Waterfest, Amador County Fair, Gold Country Fair, and the Alameda County Fair.
Catch the Wingnut Adams Blues Band Friday, Jan. 4, at 10 p.m. for a free show at the Crystal Bay Casino’s Red Room.
Jan. 4-5 Jarrett Cherner Trio performs at Moody’s Pianist and composer Jarrett Cherner brings a world of jazz music to Moody’s Bistro & Lounge on Friday, Jan. 4 and Saturday, Jan. 5, when his Latin-influenced trio takes to the stage for two free shows.
Cherner, knows that contemporary jazz influences added to those of world music equals an audience-pleasing show with a generous helping of international flair. The Jarrett Cherner Trio delivers Latin rhythms mixed with jazz swing propel improvisations within a modern harmonic framework. Moody’s audiences will hear Cherner and his group perform his original repertoire of compositions. Cherner’s compositions are both melodic and logical and his playing evokes a Keith-Jarrett-like penchant for lyricism in addition to a rhythmic influence indicative of his studies with Danilo Pérez.
Jorge Roeder on bass and Jorge Pérez-Albela on drums will join Cherner on stage at Moody’s. From Lima, Perú, bassist Jorge Roeder adds his warm tone and unshakable beat to the trio. Whether soloing, comping, or dialoging with the band, Roeder’s lines are consistently swinging and freshly musical. Jorge Pérez-Albela, also from Lima, is known to slide off his drum set in favor of his cajón or to play an assortment of percussion instruments. Equally at home swinging and playing Latin rhythms, Pérez-Albela’s rapid responsiveness combined with his rhythmic arsenal keep the trio on its toes.
Moodys’ lounge is home to live jazz shows by top U.S. and international acts. Moody’s is located a few minutes from Interstate 80 at 10007 Bridge Street in Truckee (on the corner of Commercial Row). For reservations, call (530) 587-8688 or visit www.moodysbistro.com.
Jan. 4-5 Bourgeois Gypsies play at Truckee’s Bar of America Best known for their trendy routines in Lake Tahoe and High Sierra locales, Bourgeois Gypsies bring their unique style of acoustic music to the Bar of America for two nights, Friday, Jan. 4 to Saturday, Jan. 5.
After meeting at a clothing-optional holistic hot springs resort, self-proclaimed gypsy duo Kaisa MacDonald and Arnold Mitchem decided to merge their sounds and jam together at an open mic night. Once they joined forces, their musical synergy was unstoppable. The result is a genre-warping style of music that makes you want to kick back and appreciate the moment.
MacDonald is a self-taught guitarist with a bizarre folk-punk guitar-picking style that she pairs with crooning, dream-like vocals. Mitchem has played bass guitar with Tool member Danny Carey and Jeff Buckley in a band entitled The Wild Blue Yonder. He has also recorded with Seals & Croft and Chris Whitley. Currently, Bourgeois Gypsies have two CDs to their acclaim ‘Bourgeois Gypsies’ and ‘Blue Morning.’ For more information, check out Bourgeois Gypsies at www.bgypsies.com.

Jan. 9 Acoustic guitar virtuoso Adrian Legg appearing at the Crystal Bay Casino Since the 1990 release of his first U.S. recording “Guitars and Other Cathedrals,” Adrian Legg has more than lived up to the expectations stirred by an ongoing avalanche of praise from critics, fans, top guitar magazines and peers alike. Joe Satriani once said, “He’s simply the best acoustic guitar player I’ve ever heard … he plays like he has hammers for fingers.”
As popular as his catalog of recordings is, Legg's true home is onstage. “Playing live is the whole point,” he said. “Everyone makes a journey, an effort; we all come together — me, the audience, the people who run the venue — to share this wonderful, universal, human emotional interaction. This is where music lives.” Catch Adrian Legg Wednesday, Jan. 9, for a free show at 9 p.m. at the Crystal Bay Casino’s Red Room.
