“Welcome to the Chamois!” resounds Juli Anderson’s always genuine greeting to patrons, regulars or first-timers, at the famous Loft Bar at Le Chamois in Squaw Valley.

With walls full of skiing, Olympic, and convivial history, well-worn stools (some appointed to stars of the local variety show) circle the celebrated watering hole every day the Tram Face auspiciously looms.

New Year’s Eve at the Shammy, however, races the nostalgic après ski bar into a familial fracas — the yoots of the North Shore and Squaw descend for the crisp Budweiser, frothy Fat Tire and ever-leveling Sake-Bombs. Set up by troughmaster Stick, the pitchers and pours allow for great conversations, sightings of ex ski racers hanging from the beams by ski boots and chance meetings with sole American Hahnenkamm champ Daron Rahlves.

Grab a chair, maybe the original double plucked from beloved KT-22’s original line. Or venture downstairs, passing Rahlves’ propitious longboards, expertly affixed by handcrafted iron clasps on the wall, into what during the day is family style seating for pizza, but on the Eve, houses the DJ of the night.

Lessons are learned on New Year’s Eve at the Shammy, whether of historic Alpine value, or of plain old gravity — just as that schooling continues the next day on the mountain.
