The Space The new Mikuni Japanese Restaurant & Sushi Bar at Northstar-at-Tahoe is the sixth Mikuni restaurant, the original having been founded in Fair Oaks, California. The restaurant has a modern-style interior with bamboo overtones. There’s a must-have sushi bar, and booths and tables for larger parties. A lighted wave sculpture changes color while dining. A clever lounge behind the hostess stand overlooks the ice skating rink and makes for great people watching.
The Food Mikuni is famous for its variety of creative sushi rolls, sashimi and nigiri. For those who fear raw fish, the restaurant also serves chicken and beef teriyaki, stir fry, tempura and salads.
Gotta Try The Nigiri is fresh tasting and comes in generous portions. The Heath Roll is one of the restaurant’s signature rolls with panko breaded shrimp, spicy tuna inside, fresh salmon and Japanese Mafia sauce, lightly torched and topped with masago, onion and unagi sauce. The 911 Roll is also a favorite with spicy tuna inside topped with tuna and spicy sauce, but be prepared!
The Drinks A selection of beers on tap include Sapporo, Kirin Ichiban, Sierra Nevada, Fat Tire, Newcastle Brown Ale and Blue Moon. A modest wine list with a couple of Californian standards: MacMurray Pinot, Rodney Strong Cab and Deloach Chardonnay. Also a selection of Sake including Kurosawa, Haiku, Gekkeikan Silver and Horin.
Tidbit Always ask about special rolls that are not on the menu as the sushi chefs usually have something up their sleeve.
Price Range Nigiri is priced at $5.50 for two pieces and rolls range from $5.50 to $16. All other entrees are $15 and under.
Hours of Operation 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily
