Here’s to the mountain ladies who can fire up the blower.

I was sipping fresh, hot coffee as I got ready for work Friday morning. I put on a nice shirt while watching the KCRA television news report.

It was then that I realized that while I was living the life of a refined professional; grooming myself and getting ready in a civilized manner, my wife was outside — snow blowing.

I started to feel bad for a second, but then I realized Laura wanted to be out there throwing around the fresh 10 inches that came to Tahoma on Friday.

My wife likes power tools. This summer, when we resurfaced our deck we fought over who got to use the larger sander. She even brags about her snow blowing prowess to her friends, something I witnessed Friday evening when we attended her company’s Christmas party.

“Oh yeah, I was working that thing,” she exclaimed with a laugh as she put her hands around two imaginary snow blower handles.

She sipped her martini.

I fell in love with her all over again.

“Yeah, I want to learn how to use one too,” enthused one of her girlfriends. It was then that I realized my wife is not the only Tahoe-babe that is willing and eager to engage in snow removal.

We were out, hiking in the snow, cutting a Christmas tree on Sunday and our friend, mother of four grown boys and a Tahoe resident for 13 years, said she still loved to shovel snow.

“It’s such a good workout,” she said.

So, a salute to you hardworking mountain women, out there with your snow blowers and your shovels. Winter is here — let’s not work too hard — it is time to play.

Women’s edition camps and clinics

Alpine Meadows Ski Resort will offer clinics especially for women three times throughout the season — twice in the form of three day midweek clinics and once as a three day weekend clinic. The Alpine Women’s Clinics are among the most popular in the West, as seen in the December, 2004 issue of Shape Magazine.

Technical skill, strength and fun are top priorities, as well as providing a safe and supportive atmosphere. Clinics include three full days of skiing with top female instructors, video analysis, advice on choosing and fitting equipment, apres ski and lunch. The clinics are open to intermediate and advanced skiers.
A registration form is available online at www.skialpine.com.

Women’s clinic dates 2007–2008
January 15–17
February 8–10
March 4–6
$472 for passholders or $595 includes lift tickets.

New this year...
Alpine Meadows has teamed up with Granlibakken to offer a special room price for clinic participants. Pricing includes lodging plus a full hot buffet breakfast and use of all of Granlibakken facilities including an outdoor heated pool, sauna, hot tub and accommodations. The Alpine Meadows shuttle will even pick you up at Granlibakken’s door. Condos with fireplaces and kitchens are also available for larger groups.

For more information, call Granlibakken at (800) 543-3221 and ask for the Alpine Meadows Women’s Clinic lodging rate.
