Make a difference at the Boys and Girls Club haunted house
On Oct. 26, the Parasol Tahoe Community Foundation AmeriCorps program will participate in Make A Difference Day by soliciting donations of household goods for the Mountain Rose Safe House as the admission cost for a haunted house they are putting on in conjunction with the Boys and Girls Club’s Harvest Festival.

Make A Difference Day was created by USA Weekend in order to encourage community members to become personally and positively involved in their communities. To that end, the region’s AmeriCorps members decided to put on a collaborative event, one which will provide a safe and fun Halloween experience for the local children, raise awareness of the Mountain Rose Safe House Program, and to collect some much needed small donations for the Safe House.

The Mountain Rose Safe House program provides a violence-free temporary living environment for women and children leaving abusive relationships. They are in need of such small household items as calling cards, grocery gift certificates, laundry products, toiletries, diapers, paper towels, etc. The AmeriCorps volunteers are asking that parents and children will bring small donations of that type to the Haunted House as the price of admission.

The Haunted House will be held from 6-9 p.m. on Oct. 26 at the Boys and Girls Club at 8125 Steelhead Ave, Kings Beach.

At the beginning of the 1980s — with the fall of disco and the commercial demise of punk rock — music took a turn into what was dubbed, “one of the most romantic periods in the history of popular music.” Musicians abandoned their guitars and traditional drum kits for the latest in state-of-the-art technology: synthesizers, drum machines, and special effects.

They donned a more androgynous look known as “New Romantic.” The result was music alive with sensual crooning, searing synthesizers, pulsating bass lines and pounding electronic drums, carrying a message of love, politics and sexual being. Thus was created a “New Wave” of pop and dance music, when bands like Duran Duran, Eurythmics, The Cure, and the Thompson Twins were on the cutting edge. The 1980s also saw a multitude of unforgettable “one-hit-wonders” such as Modern English, Gary Numan, and Dexy’s Midnight Runners.

Tainted Love, the seven-piece outfit from San Francisco, brings you back to the days when keyboards ruled the airwaves, cascading hairdos were commonplace and outlandish fashions lit up the pioneering early days of MTV.

With a stellar line-up of three high-energy singers driven by a power house band whose credentials include Pride & Joy, Super Diamond, Car Wash, Panama, and Yah-Yah Littleman, Tainted Love delivers a non-stop 80s live show featuring “Hungry Like the Wolf,” “I Melt With You,” “Obsession,” “Safety Dance” and many other pop gems from that deliriously decadent decade. One night of Tainted Love and you’ll forget that disco ever happened!

Hella-ween Fright Festival and Little Goblins Ball
A special Halloween party is going down at the North Lake Tahoe Conference Center on Oct. 31 with something for ghouls and goblins of all ages.

The night will kick off with the “Little Goblins Ball” — a free trick or treating party for the young goblins, family and young at heart. From 6-8 p.m. come for the treats, ghoulish games, a costume contest and live music with the Chad Bowen Project.
Then, as the little ones head home and the moon begins to raise over Lake Tahoe, so does the now 18 and over party. Two separate stages and rooms featuring some of the best live music and DJs in the land will also play host to a costume contest and a full bar.

Starting things off at 9 p.m. on the Supernatural Stage will be Ten Cent Lure, a band that draws from a diverse background and combines elements of rock, funk, groove and even country to create their trademark Funkin’ Swanky Tonk sound.

Then shoot over to the Monster Stage at 10 p.m. for a killer set from Mama’s Cookin’, a band that’s new to the Tahoe area but emerging on the scene with a sound that could only come from the modern age: Hip-hop beats and conscious lyrics melded with a solid base of rock and delta blues. The four players generate sounds completely unique to this young band. Audiences across the country attest to the fact that this is music that inspires.

Blood will be beginning to boil at this point and the only cure is Absynth on the Supernatural Stage at 11 p.m. From jam band roots and electronica influence, Absynth creates a unique blend of improvisational jams with intense break beats and dynamic melodies. The instrumental trio combines drums, bass, and guitar with computer based loops and samples to produce their own brand of Absynth.

What could top this already amazing night? How about a full out, wild and crazy set like you’ve never seen before from Frame of Mind on the Monster Stage at Midnight. Frame Of Mind is a band, whose very limits cannot be defined. Interweaving epic songwriting with improvisational exploration, catchy melodies with groove driven rhythms, and thoughtful lyrics with skilled instrumentation, their eclectic sound is best appreciated in their extended musical excursions that highlight the very essence of live music.

Throughout the night the Monster Stage will feature a special live interactive real-time visual experience by Helium Visuals. and local Tahoe brews will be flowing thanks to south Tahoe’s Mt. Tallac Brewing Co.

Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door ($20 at the door without costume). Pick them up in Kings Beach at the Conference Center, Java Hut, and at Mad About Music or online at www.JamBaseTickets.com.
