The Tahoe World’s Paul Raymore caught up with four of the Tahoe athletes involved in the Outside magazine photo shoot via email last week to see what they thought about being a part of a fashion photo shoot, and what they think of Tahoe style.
Jeremy Benson
• Age: 28
• Hometown: Milford, Conn.
• Current Residence: Tahoe City
• Sport: I am a Skier, or at least I try.
• Goals for this winter: My goals for this coming winter are to have as much fun as possible, skiing powder all over the western U.S. while shooting photos and video when appropriate. I’d really like to get back up to Alaska in the spring. One of the things I want to focus on is putting together a good video segment with a solid film company...
• How he got drafted into the Outside photo shoot: I ran into Megan Michelson at SIA in Las Vegas in January and she asked if I would be around Tahoe in early April, and it worked out.
• What clothes did they put you in? I’m sponsored by Columbia Sportswear, so all the outerwear that I had on was stuff that I already had. I’d been skiing in most of it all season, we get our samples of next year’s clothes in November.
• Was it stuff you’d actually wear? Anything totally ridiculous? Some of the streetwear was a little funky, they had me wearing pants that were way tighter than anything I’d ever worn before, and some of the colors were a little different than what I’d normally wear, but overall the clothing selections weren’t too far-fetched
• What’s your own personal style? My own personal style... Uh, comfortable, I try to be as comfortable as possible. On the mountain, my style is kind of dictated by the clothes that I am given, but I strive for baggy, functional, if that’s a style...
• What is your favorite article of clothing in your closet? My favorite article of clothing would have to be my Thermostat Down Parka by Columbia. It fits right, and has a powder skirt and pit vents, it’s the ultimate skiing puffy.
• In your opinion, what’s the worst fashion trend on the slopes and on the streets around Tahoe? The worst fashion trend on the slopes would have to be the rebirth of neon, I hope it’s on the way out. I’m also not a big fan of the gangster look, the mountains aren’t the place to be thuggin’. As for style on the streets, since I lack style, I shouldn’t say anything about that probably. Just go skiing and have fun, and hopefully this winter treats us right...
Allyson Carroll
• Age: 19
• Hometown: Truckee
• Current residence: Truckee
• Sport: Snowboard
• Goals for this winter: I want to get as much riding in as possible, do some contests, travel and just have a blast!
• How she got drafted into the Outside photo shoot: One of my sponsors recommended me to Outside Magazine.
• What clothes did they put you in? They put me in Bonfire outerwear and other street wear brands that I can’t recall.
• Was it stuff that you would actually wear? I would definitely wear the outerwear but not necessarily with the assessories. As far as the street wear I would most likely mix and match a few of the pieces.
• Anything totally ridiculous? They would always tuck my snow pants into my Sorel Boots and they had me wear giant fur gloves that matched my giant fur hat. They were pretty hilarious!
• What’s your own personal style? My style is pretty relaxed.
• What is your favorite article of clothing and why? I am a big fan of my leggings and beanies. I love being comfortable.
• In your opinion, what is the worst fashion trend on the slopes and on the streets around Tahoe? Snow bunnies on the mountain during the holidays wearing tank tops with their underwear hanging out. I’m also not a huge fan of the huge fur coats and the boots that look like Chewbaca’s feet.
Dan Robichaud
• Age: 33
• Hometown: Milford, Mass.
• Current residence: Squaw Valley USA
• Sport: Ski, Tele, Snowboard, and an ocasional monoboard.
• Goals for this winter: To have fun patrolling at Squaw, stay healthy and possibly pursue guiding in Alaska.
• How he got drafted into the Outside photo shoot: Got recommended by a friend.
• What clothes did they put you in? The newest outdoor and street gear, from the North Face, Smith, Patagonia and other top brands.
• Was it stuff you’d actually wear? Some of it was, like the North Face onesy that looked like seperate pants and jacket (I tried to take it home for further R&D but got denied), and the Patagucci jacket!
• Anything totally ridiculous? They made me wear these skinny jeans! I had to jump up and down to get them up, and the zipper scared me, I didn’t even try the button!
• What’s your own personal style? Relaxed and functional, a little on the baggy side; I usually wear a nice button up shirt under my patrol costume.
• What is your favorite article of clothing in your closet? Cargo shorts and flip flops unless it is snowing... OK, even when it is snowing.
• In your opinion, what’s the worst fashion trend on the slopes and on the streets around Tahoe? On the slopes — jeans, unless they are acid washed cuz I heard they are warmer. Ski and snowboard pants worn practically around the ankles, get a belt! On the streets — Ugg boots and Yankees hats!
“The whole shoot was a blast; we got to try on a bunch of different costumes, I mean outfits, and everyone was really nice and fun. We went to Sugarbowl and played with an avi dog and gambled at the Cal Neva and were made to check out girls at the Cottonwood, had some soosh at the Dragonfly… I only wish I had more time to work on my Blue Steel and my Magnum, ‘It’s not even done yet, I shouldn’t even be talkin’ about it!’”
Jason Walker Dobbs
• Age: 27 (28 on or around Nov. 5)
• Hometown: Evergreen, Colo.
• Current residence: Truckee, Calif.
• Sport: I ski. I also write plays about skiing.
• Goals for this winter: To qualify for the World Tour of Freeskiing, and get a national ski mag photo.
• How he got drafted into the Outside photo shoot: While filming in the Alpine backcountry with Adventure Film Works, [filmmaker] Duane Kubischta’s cell phone rang. He answered, and said, “actually he’s right here,” and passed the phone to me. With the wind howling, and cold temps, I would have liked to keep my gloves on. The other end said “Hi this is Megan Michelson from Outside.” I said, “This is Jason, also Outside.” It was a match made, and my hands were very cold. Details were worked out later. I still have no idea how they got my number… oh yeah, they didn’t. I have no idea how they got a hold of me through Duane, then.
• What clothes did they put you in? I agreed to do the shoot only if they could put me in all my sponsors’ gear as applicable (Obermeyer, Level Gloves, Smith Optics). I was pleased they were able to do that in every shot, except one which was casual wear. It turns out that the only shot they used was the one not representing my sponsors.
• Was it stuff that you would actually wear? I liked all the ski clothing I wore. The only outfit that wasn’t my style was the one they ended up featuring on my page, besides the Napapijri boots in that shot. Those were sweet.
• Anything totally ridiculous? I was lucky. In each change, I was the only one who consistently was dressed in normal (“I’d actually wear that”) outfits throughout my wardrobe. The others were hit-or-miss. I was also the only one who didn’t need any make up. Something about my face is either camera-ready or unworkable beyond hope.
• What’s your own personal style? I liked subdued, earthtone and greyscale colors on the streets, and bright, bold colors that pop for the slopes.
• What is your favorite article of clothing and why? My favorite pair of jeans (MEK from different people) because they wear well many times without washing, and look as great in Safeway as they do at Plumpjack.
• In your opinion, what is the worst fashion trend on the slopes and on the streets around Tahoe? Riding with beltless pants below the assline. I understand fashion is subjective, but when it totally inhibits your function, it must be objective bad fashion… It’s gotta fit right. [And on the streets:] Dressy women’s shoes worn during Tahoe storms… again, there are times for fashion, and there are times to look outside before you get ready to leave the house.
“The whole affair was amusing. It involved six laid back Tahoe local athletes; a couple fun life-loving women from the magazine, in from Santa Fe; a down-to-earth photographer and his crew from Austin; and a high-strung, high-energy ‘fashion consultant’ from L.A. (plus her assistant) who cracked me up with their take control, time is money, ‘Look beautiful for the camera sweetheart,’ ‘Those boots DO NOT go with that sweater,’ ‘Who told you to wear that?’ attitude. You could tell they’d done this before… but with real models. Overall it was a great mix of people and personalities, and it seemed we all had a good time working together.”
