The Space
A brightly-colored, tropically-themed space that stands out in the European ski village-esque Village at Northstar, Big Wave Burritos and Wraps carries a tiki/ surf theme throughout the restaurant. The colors and vibe feel warm and exotic, even when the white stuff is flying outside. The interior seats 36, while outdoor seating can accommodate 40 — and includes a role-out tiki bar.

The Food
Chris Banovich, restaurant owner and chef, worked his way around the Tahoe culinary scene, eventually running all food operations at Northstar, but decided to tackle a new venture with Big Wave.

“We try to offer an affordable and substantial deal for everybody — a good bang for the buck,” Banovich said. “I decided there was a need with everybody else going high-end.”

Influences include what he described as Yucatan — a Hispanic/ Caribbean blend — as well as Thai, Hawaiian, Tex-Mex, and Californian. The theme follows through from breakfast burritos to wraps, burritos, and burrito bowls.

The Drinks
Specialty drinks include the Pinarita, a pineapple margarita, and the Mozito, a Zima twist on the Caribbean rum cocktail. The “20 at 4:20” happy hour special means at 4:20 p.m. for 20 minutes Pabst Blue Ribbon sells for a dollar a beer. Other happy hour deals with affordable beer for the ski bums runs from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. daily.

Gotta Try
The Rastaman wrap encompasses just about every flavor at Big Wave, Banovich said, with chipotle, grilled corn and pineapple salsa, and a melt-in-your-mouth banana-leaf rum-roasted pork. The wrap also contains peppers, onions, guacamole, and romaine.

Tidbit
After winning the Blazing Pans Mountain Chef Cook-off event two years in a row, Banovich passed the tiki torch to this year's winner, Jacques Cornelis from the Resort at Squaw Creek.

Price Range
With breakfast items starting at $4.50 to monster-sized wraps at $9.50, Big Wave is cheap grub on the Truckee-Tahoe price scale.

Hours
Right now with mountain bike season winding down, Big Wave is open from 7:45 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday, and 7:45 a.m. to 6 or 7 p.m. the rest of the week. Once ski season kicks off, hours will be 7:45 a.m. to 8 p.m. every day.
