The Truckee Renaissance Faire is a multi-generational, family-friendly event set in the year 1562 at the height of the Renaissance era and its influences in Scottish, English and French politics and religion. The faire celebrates Michaelmas, the harvest festival.

Scheduled to run Saturday, Sept. 15 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept. 16 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., the faire will take place in the shires of the Truckee River Regional Park in Truckee.

Faire goers will have the opportunity to eat and drink heartily, mingle with guilds from various countries, shop for curious artifacts, and be entertained by musicians, singers, storytellers, puppeteers, dancers, magicians and pranksters.

On hand will be Captain Thomas Maclaren and the Privateers of the Dauntless, the public face of the Sacramento Historical Maritime Educational Organization, complete with their scale model square-rigged late 1500s merchant ship, The Dauntless. Captain Maclaren and his crew will open the eyes of both young and old to the colorful history of the merchant mariners and privateers of days past.

Competing for the attention of The Queen and the adoration of the masses will be the gallant Knights of the Crimson Rose who will joust in authentic Renaissance style and armor. Honor, horsemanship and skill at arms are what make a knight chivalrous and the Knights of the Crimson Rose represent the pinnacle of those ideals of knightly chivalry.

Artists and artisans such as blacksmiths, leather workers, jewelers and costumers will demonstrate their ancient arts in the ward of the village merchants, while hearty snacks and full meals will tempt those with an appetite for Renaissance treats. And, as usual, the Winged Boar Tavern — presented by the Truckee Rotary — will provide rest and adult refreshment to quench any thirst.

The Queen and her Court personally invite all, whether prince or peasant, to this fête. Come enjoy the historical atmosphere and partake of the food and activities that benefit local schools.

The Truckee Renaissance Faire is a non-profit organization produced by local volunteers to raise money for the enrichment of social studies through living history programs in Truckee schools.

Admission to the Truckee Renaissance Faire will by $10 for adults and $5 for children (12 and under) and seniors (65 and over). For more information contact Faire Director Sandy Horn, aka Lady Jean, at (530) 582-1498, or see www.truckeerenfaire.org.

Other guilds and troupes at the Faire:

St. Andrew’s Noble Order of Royal Scots
Saint Andrews is a non-profit, educational corporation dedicated to educating the public on the history, customs, dress and culture of Scotland in the year 1562 during the Queen’s Progress throughout Scotland. Our many dedicated volunteers strive to entertain and educate through the medium of living history.

The Guild of Saint Andrews is the premier Renaissance re-enactment group specializing in presenting the people and events of the court of Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots. With over 125 re-enactors portraying historic events from the mid-1560s and Her Majesty’s Royal Court, our group recreates the romantic period of Mary’s life right after her return to Scotland from France and while on her annual summer progress.

With costumes reproduced from portraits, dialects and languages of the era, our talented cast combines theatrical skills with historic research to bring a small piece of Mary’s Court to visitors of Scottish Games and Renaissance Faires. Our days at faire include dueling, feasting, music, games, battles and of course an opportunity for you to meet and have a personal audience with Her Majesty.

Knights of the Crimson Rose
Knights of the Crimson Rose is a jousting troupe that brings chivalry back to life for the modern day world. Our jousting shows are as close to a historical jousting competition as you will be able to see without traveling back in time. Honor, horsemanship and skill at arms are what make a knight chivalrous and the Knights of the Crimson Rose represent the pinnacle of those ideals of knightly chivalry.

What began as passion for the world of horses as well as an appreciation for the European martial arts has become a living walk through history for Jeff and Katrina Sanders, founders of the company.

The jousting troupe travels throughout the western United States to provide an entertaining and educational show representing knighthood in the 16th century. The crowd is introduced to tournament games that were practiced by knights for combat training or competitive purposes as well as live steel sword fighting done from horseback and the joust. The skills required for the games and equestrian combat take superb horsemanship skill as well as intense accuracy. The crescendo of the show is, of course, the actual joust, a full-contact experience that tests the bravery of the knights. Well-practiced, but un-choreographed, no two shows are the same. The best knight of the day is the winner and the crowd is sure to be entertained.
